This page is about the Writefull for Overleaf integration, which is only available to some users at the moment. If you don’t see the option to turn on the integration in your Account Settings, it should be available for you in the near future.

What is Writefull?

Writefull’s AI tools help students and researchers around the world to write better, faster, and with confidence.

It doesn’t just copy edit research texts, it helps with a range of writing tasks, from choosing words and rephrasing sentences, to writing abstracts, and more. Using custom language models trained on published research, Writefull gives high-quality language support tailored to research writing. Even some of the world’s leading scholarly publishers use Writefull’s AI language edits.

Overleaf and Writefull are both part of Digital Science, a company that drives global research progress through innovative, AI-powered technology.

The Writefull for Overleaf integration

You can now use Writefull directly in the Overleaf editor by enabling it in the integration area of your Account Settings page.

Enabling the integration will add additional tools to your Overleaf editor toolbar.

These new tools give you access to Writefull’s language suggestions, as well as a range of other tools (depending on which Writefull plan you have).

Signing in to Writefull

Once you’ve enabled Writefull for Overleaf, you’ll need to sign in. You can do this using an existing Writefull account, if you have one, or you can use Sign in with Overleaf. Both are explained in the following sections.

Using your Writefull account

If you have a Writefull account with a password, you can log in by clicking on the Writefull icon in the editor toolbar and entering your Writefull login details.

After you’ve logged in, Writefull will have access to the content of any project you open so you can get AI language feedback and suggestions.

Using your Overleaf account (linking accounts)

When you enable the Writefull integration, you can link your Overleaf account to Writefull, making the sign in process super straightforward. This works whether you have an existing Writefull account or not.

If you have a Writefull account already

If the email address you use to sign in to Overleaf and Writefull is the same one, you can link both accounts using the Sign in with Overleaf option. You’ll be prompted to enter your Writefull password when you do this the first time, to confirm you want to link your accounts.

If you want to link a Writefull account that uses a different email address from your Overleaf account, you’ll need to log in using your Writefull username and password, as explained in the previous section.

Note: The primary email address you use for Overleaf must be confirmed to link your Overleaf and Writefull accounts.

If you don’t have a Writefull account yet

In this case, when you click Sign in with Overleaf, a Writefull account will be created for you.

After you’ve logged in, Writefull will have access to the content of any project you open so you can get AI language feedback and suggestions.

Premium Writefull options

Writefull offers premium plans that provide additional tools that can be used with Overleaf, such as TeXGPT. Writefull’s premium options are separate from Overleaf's subscription plans.

What data is shared when I link my accounts?

When you use Sign in with Overleaf, your email address and Overleaf user ID will be shared with Writefull.

How do I turn the Writefull for Overleaf integration on or off?

You can turn Writefull for Overleaf on and off in the Integrations section of your Account Settings page.

Turning off the integration will remove the Writefull icon and tools from your Overleaf toolbar. You can turn on the Writefull for Overleaf integration at any time.

How do I pause language checking in the Writefull for Overleaf language tool?

Can I hide the Writefull for Overleaf toolbar, but still keep it running?

Not at the moment. You’ll need to go to your Account Settings in Overleaf and turn it off.

I use the Writefull for Overleaf Chrome extension - what is the difference between that and the Writefull for Overleaf integration?

The Writefull for Overleaf integration provides the same functionality as the Chrome extension and will be replacing the extension. If you see the option to turn on the Writefull for Overleaf integration in your Account Settings, you can disable and uninstall the Chrome extension.

When I use the Writefull for Overleaf integration, does Writefull use my project to train its AI?

No, Writefull doesn’tstore or use any of your texts or how you interact with (accept / reject) the language suggestions. Writefull trains their models on Open Access research texts, and their team’s linguists regularly analyze the models’ outputs on test documents, marking incorrect cases to identify points to improve.

I am not sure if my institution allows the use of AI-based tools. Can I use the Writefull for Overleaf integration?

Please make sure to consult your institution's policy on academic integrity to find out if these include guidance on the use of AI-assisted language tools or generative AI. If you can’t locate a policy for your institution, or if you have questions about it, it’s important to ask your professor or an academic advisor about institutional, departmental, and course-specific guidelines on using these tools.

How do I delete my Writefull account?

Note: Deleting your Writefull account doesn’t affect your Overleaf account or your projects.

How do I unlink my accounts?

Sometimes, unlinking your accounts might be necessary, for example, if you want to switch from a personal to an institutional subscription.
